In the book "The Roads of Chess Battles," Alexander Koblenz, Mikhail Tal's longtime coach, tells about the first 12 years of the magician from Riga's chess career, during which he moves from a promising junior to the world champion (1960),...
and also discusses the rematch against Mikhail Botvinnik (1961).
This classic book was first published in the USSR in 1963 and contains 77 games and fragments with the author's annotations, his reports from the scenes, and insider information.
It includes five of Tal's games from the 1960 match and seven from the 1961 rematch. In addition to Botvinnik, Tal's opponents include Bobby Fischer, Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, David Bronstein, Viktor Korchnoi, Paul Keres, Efim Geller, Yuri Averbakh, and other chess stars of the 1950s-60s.
The analyses were verified and corrected by international master Valery Bronznik. Without interfering with Koblenz's demonstration of how Tal annihilated his opponents in the magical style of attacking chess, Bronznik revealed many new astonishing ideas in Tal's games, and the book as a whole serves as a practical guide to combat chess.
Especially for the new edition, a preface was written by grandmaster Alexey Shirov.
